artist Corey Harris

Born in Denver, Colorado in 1969, singer, songwriter and guitarist Corey Harris has been touring and recording professionally for more than a decade. He got his start as a simple New Orleans street singer, occasionally driving his car to Mississippi, Texas and beyond to ply his trade. Since then, he has brought his roots and reggae tinged blues music to such far-flung locales as Mali and Guinea West Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. This includes the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (he is a former resident of the Crescent City), as well as the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, the WOMAD festivals in England and the Canary Islands and the Festival International in Lafayette, Louisiana. He has also traveled to Brazil and West Africa with the US State Department’s Jazz Ambassadors program. In the course of his travels Corey has shared the stage with BB King, Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant, the Wailers, Burning Spear, The Dave Matthews Band, and Ben Harper, among many others. In addition to extensive touring, Corey has composed music for HBO’s acclaimed series, “The Corner”, as well as for the PBS documentary, “The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow.”

A musician since childhood, Corey began his career as a traditional blues singer and guitarist. From these simple beginnings he has built a worldwide following among musicians and fans alike. Rolling Stone gave his rocking 2002 release, “Downhome Sophisticate” four stars. Acclaimed film director Martin Scorcese then tapped Corey to star in and narrate the documentary film, “Feel Like Going Home.” Filmed in Mississippi and Mali, West Africa, it tells the story of the blues from African origins, through slavery to todays blues and roots music. Broadcast in America on the PBS network and released in theaters internationally, the film features Corey’s collaborations with a number of American and Malian musicians, most notably Taj Mahal, Ali Farka Toure, and Kora master Toumani Diabate. From this experience came the critically acclaimed album, Mississippi to Mali (Rounder), which was recorded in both locations and features many of the same artists appearing in the film.

Daily Bread, Corey’s most recent release on Rounder records, represents the culmination of years of touring and recording. Hailed by Billboard magazine as “a gem,” the record features New Orleans piano genius Henry Butler on several songs and avant-garde vocalist and trumpet man Olu Dara (father of rapper Nas). Featuring stoned reggae tracks such as Sylford Walker’s “Lambsbread”, and John Holt’s “I See Your Face” this seventh release from Corey turns the blues concept on its head. With Afro-blues hybrids such as the mystical “Mami Wata”, “Khaira”, and the ska scorcher, “The Bush in Burning,” Corey and his electric band, the 5x5 (with John Gilmore on drums and Houston Ross on bass) are taking the music world by storm. Offbeat magazine calls Corey “one of America’s more vital roots artists, so deep inside himself that he remains uncategorizable.” Listen to Corey Harris and discover what the international underground has been raving about for years.
